CHEST (Cultural Heritage Educational Semantic Tool) is an application to support the creation and reuse of educational experiences related to cultural heritage around the world. The aim is to enable teachers to use the information to carry out activities with their students, in the classroom or in various locations of interest.

The application uses Linked Open Data (LOD) to automatically generate places of interest and educational tasks. It also stores teachers' annotations in the same format. This data is accessible to the whole community.

This realisation use case has been developed as part of the doctoral thesis of the GSIC/EMIC research group formed by engineers and educators from the School of Telecommunications Engineering, the School of Computer Engineering and the Faculty of Education and Social Work of the University of Valladolid. In addition, this app won first prize in the ‘Educational resource’ category of the 7th edition of the open data competition of the Junta de Castilla y León.

Designed with data from the Community of Madrid, this initiative has made it possible to monitor the recovery process after COVID-19 in sectors such as transport, tourism and public safety.

The tool has been developed with the aim of understanding not only the impact, but also the degree of recovery that some services and activities have experienced after the pandemic in Madrid.

Thus, through open data portals, the application offers interactive visualizations with the following variables:

  • Municipal police
    •  Citizen safety information
    • Alcohol consumption on public roads
    • Inspections and actions in premises
  • Tourism
    • Number of nights and average price at Airbnb
  • Mobility and transportation
    • Occupancy rate of parking lots in the city of Madrid
    • Metro ridership
    • BiciMAD movements
    • Google mobility transportation stations
  • COVID-19
    • Cumulative incidence rate

In each panel, conclusions can be known based on data on the state of recovery of each parameter, a situation that varies depending on the sector. While on-street drinking and AirbnB tourism see higher activity, metro ridership is still lower than pre-pandemic data.
