Open Data Day 2022: For a more effective reuse of open data
- Date: March 9, 2022, 17h
- Format: Face-to-face
- Organizers: Open Data Barcelona Initiative
Just two years after its last face-to-face event, Open Data Barcelona Initiative brings back the "face-to-face" meetings with a conference aimed at disseminating knowledge and experiences about public open data and its reuse. The evento will last from 5pm to 7pm and will be structured around two round tables:
- Opportunities linked to open data in institutions, where the new features of institutional data portals will be discussed, highlighting the datasets offered and the new functionalities that boost their reuse.
- Projects based on the reuse of open data, focusing on how to use such data in a project, highlighting its potential as a source of knowledge to solve the challenges faced by various groups.
The event is free of charge, but prior registration is required.
Other international events
In addition to the activities held in our country, events are also taking place in other parts of the world, some of which can be followed online.
For example, New York City celebrates from March 5 to 13, 2022 its Open Data Week, organized by the Office of Data Analytics of the New York City Mayor's Office and BetaNYC. This celebration occurs each year to coincide not only with Open Data Day, but also with the New York City Open Data Act, which was enacted on March 7, 2012. This year, NY Open Data Week is being celebrated in a hybrid format with both in-person and online activities. All activities are directly related to publicly available open data about New York.
Another example of an online event is the OSM Africa March Mapathon: Map Sierra Leone, an initiative that seeks to support the development of the OpenStreetMap community in Africa.
If you want to know about other activities that will be held on the occasion of Open Data Day 2022, you can visit their website.
The new school year has already begun. While students are gradually returning to schools, companies and organizations are also recovering their activity. The last quarter of the year is chosen by a large number of organizations to launch events that help us to better understand the universe of open data, bringing us success stories and giving us the opportunity to discuss the future challenges.
In datos.gob.es we have compiled some of these events:
- On September 14, the Tech.Party 2019 is held at the Nave de Madrid. This event brings together more than 30 technological communities with the objective of “sharing knowledge and stimulating critical thinking”. Conferences and workshops will address issues such as blockchain technology, data analysis, artificial intelligence, hacktivism or technological recycling.
- Ten days later, on September 24, the #GIGAPP2019 Workshop: Civic applications and open data to supervise the power will be organized by Medialab Prado. This event will introduce recent Ibero-American experiences related to data opening for public accountability. Attendees will have the opportunity to share and discuss impressions with the creators of these tools.
- Meanwhile, the IV International Congress of Transparency will take place in Malaga from September 30 to October 2. The event will be structured in plenary sessions and seminars. Each seminar will act as a working group where different subjects will be discussed, including active advertising, open data and citizen participation.
- Cáceres will host, from October 23 to 25, the X Iberian Conference on Spatial Data Infrastructures (JIIDE 2019). Under the slogan "Local IDEs, bringing digital information to citizens", technical sessions, workshops and round tables will be held to share and publicize the Inspire Directive and the various activities carried out by local IDEs. Open data and e-administration will also be discussed.
- The Barcelona City Council has launched a new edition of the Barcelona Dades Obertes Challenge, a contest aimed at promoting knowledge and the use of open data in the educational centres of Barcelona. In addition, a new edition of the World Data Viz Challenge Barcelona_Kobe is also expected for the coming months.
- Two of the big conferences that every year close the autumn events season will also take place in the Catalan capital. We are talking about the IoT Solution world Congress and the Smart City Expo 2019. The first one will take place in October 29-31 and it will address blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, e-health and other issues where open data can have a great role. For its part, the Smart City Expo 2019 will be held from November 19 to 21. It will be a mandatory meeting for those interested in cities based on data, 5G and the future of connectivity.
All these events highlight the interest in data and open data in the business and social ecosystem. An interest that continues to grow year by year, with new editions of events already held and the incorporation of new appointments to the agenda, so that all those interested in the subject can continue learning.
In 2018, the cities of Barcelona and Kobe celebrate 25 years of twinning agreement, and to commemorate it, both municipalities have launched the World Data Viz Challenge 2018 Barcelona-Kobe.
Promoting policy improvements through data visualizations
A similar challenges have been launched in each city: participants will have to generate visualizations based on open data to show the challenges of an intelligent city, which can be useful to optimize public policies. In the case of Barcelona, it will be necessary to use at least one of the more than 440 datasets included in Open Data BCN. These datasets are classified into five major themes: city and services, territory, population, administration and economy and business.
A group of experts will select the 10 best datavizs or infographics. These datavizs will be presented at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2018, on November 14. This international event has been held in Barcelona since 2011, with the aim of promoting innovation and identifying opportunities to create smart cities that respond to the needs of citizens.
Pre-registration is open until October 26
Any citizen can participate. It is only necessary to have "the skills and capabilities to understand, analyze and visualize open data”
Those interested in joining the World Data Viz Challenge 2018 Barcelona-Kobe must pre-register before October 26, by filling out this form. The deadline to submit the visualizations will be from October 2 to November 2 through this other form. The works, which may be presented in Catalan, Spanish or English, must be carried out by a maximum of two people. You can consult the full terms of participation in this link.
With this challenge, the Barcelona City Council seeks to encourage the use of open data from smart cities and tools and techniques for analyzing data and visualizations. In addition, the contest will also serve to develop the critical thinking of citizens, who are a fundamental piece to promote policies that improve our environment.
